I think I want to buy a house next year. Unlike in Seattle, I could actually get a house here and my house payments would be less than my current rent. The reasons are solid. I like my job. I don't HATE Texas. As I drove around town the other day I actually thought about making my stay here permanent. I'm sick of moving. I'm sick of starting all over in a new state. I think I'm ready to be a grown-up.
If I acquire a house, I can start the process to acquire children as well. I could do so while living in an apartment, but I live in a one bedroom and children need their own bedrooms and we go back to the I can buy a house cheaper than my current rent is - with multiple bedrooms. The one thing that makes me nervous is the electric bill. Mine is currently appalling (to me). With so much more space in a house... I shudder to think. The winter is fine because I barely use heat but the summer... I NEED AC.

I have been a home owner since 1997 and have had to rent at times in between because of location moves....I HATE RENTING! Partly because I know all my money is going to someone else's mortgage and could be going to mine, but also because I like being able to do what I want with the place I live in.
On the flip side of that, home ownership can be a hassle at times and it is a lot of responsibility. Right now, our house that have had for the last five years is still recovering from terrible renters and property management. I seem to spend almost all free time and money on it these days but I am hoping that we will get up to a status quo we can live with and that will diminish some.
I say go for it, especially if you can afford it and it would be less than what you are paying for in rent...prices are low, interests are low so you would be getting in at a great time even if it wasn't your forever home. We have owned three homes in three different states so just buying a home doesn't have to mean forever!
