In general, I'm a fairly laid back atheist. I don't care that other people believe. I don't care that it says in god we trust on money. I don't even really care if there is a moment of silence in schools. But as part of my building a community here, I decided to go to an atheist meet up. I've avoided them in general because I find it odd to sit around and talk about atheism. But I figured I'd try it out.
I found the group I found because there was a sign on the highway that advertised that they picked up litter along that stretch. I found that today was the day they clean up the highway and volunteered to do road clean up. I cleaned with two guys, one was new to the group and the other an old timer. The road clean up was fine. It is just road clean up which is no big deal.
They do a Wednesday night gathering and then apparently have business meetings once a month. After we cleaned up the road we went to lunch at a new Chinese food buffet
Anyway, I'm digressing. It was nice to meet new people and I'll probably try another event they do, but.. they're far more militant than I am. Apparently I am right to avoid atheism groups. I don't get a kick out of going where the believers are and engaging them in atheistic banter. I've never been persecuted for my non-beliefs. I don't feel the need to march or protest. Maybe I'll look for a different group that does activism that I'm more passionate about. As soon as I figure out what I'm more passionate about. :)
I did like talking books with the young daughter of one of the members. She's reading Twilight and I gave her a bit of a hard time. But she's also read Hunger Games and HP (of course). I suggested the series I'm currently reading the Lorien Legacies.
Oh... and one of the weird guys I was picking up trash with messaged me about wanting to get together and chat sometime. Uh, no. Just no.

Word number 2 - Completion
There are 32 uncompleted posts on my blog dashboard. There used to be more but I've deleted some since then. I feel like this is emblematic about me. I feel like I tend to not finish things. I think I get involved in the research and the process but can't push the button. This year I want to work on that. I would like to finish things and feel like I can say look that's done. Shortly after I moved here I 'started' putting together what I needed to make a scrapbook of my scout years. That's in a box by the closet door. Last year I started on a project for Lyday. That might actually get done, but mostly because she's waiting for it. So I want to finish things this year. I want to complete my homebuying goal. I want to finish Lyday's blanket. I want to finish some of the work projects I start that I don't want to do. :) So word number 2 is about finishing what I start - everything I start (well probably not EVERYTHING, let's be realistic) and not getting sidetracked by inanity. Except for brownies. It would probably be better if I didn't always finish the brownies. :)

Long Term Goal/Mid term goal
So I downloaded an app that is helping me track my debt repayment. Theoretically, if everything goes well by 2016 I'll be debt free except for my house. When that happens I think that's when I'll start looking for a library job. I won't be paying a huge chunk of cash out of my budget each month and I think I can take the pay hit that I'll take as a librarian. Luckily I'll be able to stalk the people I worked with at the library for my internship to see when they'll be retiring.
At my gym they have a website mymobilefit. Today I enrolled for their lifestyle challenge. I won't be as hardcore about somethings as I could be but I'm interested in the way the website can create workouts for me and help me with meal planning.

One Word - Home
Michelle is doing this whole thing with three words for her new year. I like her words. they are very clever and really clear. She joined Chris Brogan's Brave New Year program.
I don't really do resolutions, just goals. And sometimes I do well with my goals and other times I don't. So looking at my earlier goal for the new year and expanding it further leads me to the word "Home."
For me home means so much more than the big goal of purchasing a home. It relates much more to accepting jesus christ as my... oh no wait not that. It relates much more to accepting Texas as my home and building the relationships and experiences necessary to make Texas my home and not just some place I'm currently living. I have to get more involved in my community. I need to get out more and be active to try to meet new people. I also need to explore my community. I've lived here for three years and I barely know my city beyond my immediate suburb. (This will also help me in the house hunting project since a house in my current neighborhood is probably going to be more expensive than I want). I want to feel less temporary about Texas. I can't build a life here if I'm always looking onward at where to go next.
So there is word number 1 - do what is necessary to make Fort Worth not just the place I currently live, but my home.

Goals for the New Year
Michelle sets up themes for her goals for New Year. Last year it was Health and Finances. I don't really have a theme for 2013. Maybe it is Home.
My first goal - buy a house. Unlike Seattle, FW is a unique position in that I could probably save $300/mo by buying a house. Or not. Given that my electric bill will probably go up (although when I move into a house I'm switching off the rock & twig hippy electric company I currently use) that'll take up some of my funds. I'll have to pay sewage and water and all that which I currently pay only about $20/mo for. At least I presume it would go up. (Look in the span of 10 short minutes I've talked myself out of it). :) But that's my goal. That's my biggest goal. I hope I can make it work. My lease is up in August so I'll begin to seriously start looking at houses in May. I think that's the right time. It gives me 3 months to find and go through the process. You know, unless I'm too optimistic. :)
My other goals are much more minor. I want to keep going to the gym regularly. I want to work on debt. Not encouraging more but reducing the current one I have. I may have to forgoe some things I usually want to do.

Success and failures
So I've been working on exercising more and spending less. I've been doing quite well on the exercise front. According to foursquare I've been to the gym for the past 7 weeks. With the exception of last week I've done at least three days. Last week I had to work late three times and so no gym for those days. I think that's pretty darn good. I do 20 swimming laps on lap swim day or 45 minutes of water aerobics on water aerobics days. Swimming days are usually longer workouts than water aerobics days. Then I do push-ups against the pool wall and crunches in the water. But my very favorite part of the work out is the very last five minutes of my workout. Even on water aerobics days I do this. I lay back and float on my back and let everything just relax into the water. I usually float for somewhere around five minutes. I love it. If I could wear a snorkle or perhaps a scuba tank I think I could sleep like that. (Although I'm sure I'd get pretty damn cold eventually). Some spas offer a "float" as a relaxation activity (kind of like isolation tanks or sensory deprivation tanks). You float (naked) in warm extremely salty (epsom salt not regular I think) water and just let everything go. I don't seem to need that. I can just do it in the chlorine. :)
The spending money ONLY on necessities is not doing so great. I go to the gym in the evening after work. I tried going in the AM but it just was not happening. Plus it is better on traffic if I go after work. The problem is I get home after 7 pm. Sometimes I'm too tired to cook too so I end up eating take out. So much for my take out only once a week thought. (That doesn't mean I'm abandoning it, next week is a new week and an opportunity to try again.) I've also bought things that were not necessities like trashy magazines and a new shirt that I loved and well I'm sure there've been other things. Oh and before my high school reunion this weekend I want a pedicure. I tried a DIY pedicure. I do not have mad nail painting skills. A pedicure is not a necessity though so I will have to seriously think on this. Luckily my favorite pedicure place closes at 7:30 and I am not done at the gym and back in my neighborhood until after 7 so the temptation is and isn't strong.

Goals for the Summer
I usually do goals somewhere around the new year, but I’m pretty sure I was so despondent over my situation, I didn’t make any so these will be my summer goals.
1. I’ve been going to the gym 5 days a week. I would like to get to a place where I can actually swim the crawl stroke my 20 laps instead of my current 50% swim 50% water aerobics moves with a break between some of the laps. Oh and the 50% swim is mostly the breast stroke which I find easier to do. Although reading an article about swimming, the breast stroke may actually be a better stroke to do for a variety of reasons. I didn’t know that. I always presumed the crawl was better. I can usually do at least 4 laps breast stroke without needing a break, but I don’t have that with the crawl. (And by laps I mean to the other end and back)
2. I was reading about money challenges (and not being broke but can you do this challenge) and one I am going to try this summer is to not spend any money on things that aren’t necessities. (Soda is a necessity, shoes, books and new video games are not). From now until the end of July, spending less money on luxuries. Two things that will stay 1 – breakfast on Sunday mornings. 2 – One other meal out a week. Strangely, since I’ve been exercising in the evening I am more likely to cook at home. It is odd since I usually don’t get home until almost 7, but I seem much more willing to cook. I’m debating giving up fancy cable. I almost never watch HBO or Cinemax but True Blood is starting up again this summer and I do like that. I’ll table that decision until I see the season premiere. I may also join the ranks of those who have given up their landline. I’ll have to see how doing so affects my bundle with Charter. I rarely, if ever, use it and mostly all I get are solicitation calls or bill collectors from people who had the line at least 2 years ago.
3. I would like to work on and hopefully finish at least one of the arts & crap projects I’ve begun but have not gotten very far in. I have a lot of art & crap supplies and once I’m done with a couple of these projects I can get rid of the extraneous supplies. Since I am imagining it will be super hot again, I don’t know if I’ll get out as much as I usually like to. Maybe I’ll try some of the free museums and other activities in the metroplex. (Free because see item 2)
4. I need to get back to volunteering. When I have too much time on my hands I tend to a – nap and b – navel gaze. Neither one is really that good for me. Napping screws up my sleep schedule and I have a hard time sleeping correctly. I already live way too much in my head so when I have too much time on my hands to over think about things it just drives me to obsession and that isn’t good.

Goals for 2012
Anyone who has read this before knows I don't make resolutions. I make goals. Things I'd like to do better at.
Meal Planning. I make this goal periodically. Usually after I realize how much take out I'm eating. I eat a lot of take out. Too much take out. I'm pretty good about setting up food for the week for lunches but somehow not dinners.
Keep my 4.0 GPA in grad school. With under grad I never had a chance. Well maybe I had a chance, but since I took Speech the first semester of my first year I never really had a chance. Somehow now, though, I've got one. Three semesters in and I have a 4.0. I have 3 classes in the spring and one in the summer. I know in reality it doesn't mean anything really, but now that I'm almost there I want it.
I would add find a new job but that was a goal for 2011 and didn't pan out. That's kind of always an ongoing goal. Without babbling too much about something that hasn't changed, I hate my job. I want a new job. Maybe once I have my MLIS I can get the new job easier. I hope. The thought of being at the current job for another year makes me want to cry. A LOT. Although there is a glimmer of hope (which keeps getting pushed back) in that we're merging with another company. I keep hoping evil boss will be let go to keep the hr person from the new company.

Goals for 2011
As I've long established I don't do resolutions. I just have goals. Things I'd like to accomplish. I didn't make any goals in 2009 for 2010 apparently. I did find goals in 2008 but those fell by the wayside. So trying again:
1 - I want to get out more. Maybe do more meet-ups. It's been 8 months and I still have nobody to hang out with and although I've dated more since moving to Texas than I have in the last 2 years of living in Seattle, I'm not interested in the minotaur so I'll not do that again.
2 - Get a new job. I hate my current job.
3 - Keep working on paying off debt. I've been trying to pay more on my cards than min payment and all that but I've gotten a little bad over the holidays. Sadly I know where my tax refund will be going this year. (Well not sadly this is good and what is necessary.)
4 - Do well in grad school. I am a slacker at heart. And a lot of this will be online/virtual class. I'd like to do well this time. (I didn't do horribly in college. I had like a 3.2 GPA but it would be cool to graduate with honors or something like that).
5 - Lose more weight. I've lost about 20 lbs so far. I can pull all of my pants down without undoing them. Before I buy new pants I want to lose more weight so I can go down 2 pants sizes and not 1. I was doing well about exercising before so I'm hoping to get back into that. If I get the job in Plano I want between that commute and the commute to the college it will get much harder to eat well and be careful about calories.
So there we go. 5 goals. They seem doable.

Other goals
I think when I get 1/2 way between weight x and weight y I'm going to go sky diving. I may need to have my sister visit then because I'm not 100% certain I can do it on my own. :) (She'll do it with me. She'll do anything apparently. : p ) She's certified in scuba diving (that's not why I say she'll do anything) and I totally want to do that too.

Fait Accompli!
Remember earlier in the summer when I said I wanted to clean out my storage unit? I did it. Go me. Go me. Go go go me. I cleaned out 8 boxes into 3 trash bags and 3 boxes for charity and 1 tote to go back into the storage. Not too shabby.
My car is in the shop this week. Luckily the person who hit me hit the part that already had a scrape so that's getting fixed by default. Yay!
I have a 2nd date with the minotaur this weekend. Dating. Yay! (Well that may be a stretch. We'll see how it goes.)
I'm going to a volunteering meet up next Saturday. If things don't pan out with the minotaur (and I really don't think they will... I'm not that interested), maybe I'll meet a new one on Saturday... one who knows how to use tools and volunteers. :P Yay!
My sister and her kid came to visit last weekend. Yay! I'm sure they'll come again.

Summer Goals
Something about this new apartment is inspiring me to be better about organization and whatnot. So I have a goal for the summer... get organized. I got rid of a lot of clothes before the move, although I'm pretty sure there are more to do.
- I have 4 boxes of chaotic photos. Toss the ones that are bad. Label them all. And put some to be on display in my photo boxes.
- Go through the boxes in storage. There are boxes in my storage that moved with me from Alaska. I don't think they've been gone through since then. I'm sure there's a lot to get rid of, but I do want to keep my kid books.
Hmm. That doesn't seem like a lot, but given that my storage unit is pretty full it will be. :)

Goals for the New Year
I'm in CA. Yay! Where it is warm. Double yay! Hanging out with a baby, and Michelle and her husband. Triple yay!
I took back most of the tops from my mom and got $77 in Dillards store credit. Luckily they allow you to use it online. Unluckily I think their sizes either run small or accurate because the shirts I tried on were uncomfortably tight in places they shouldn't be. Or maybe that was the style and they were supposed to be tight. I don't know. We had to drive out into the middle of nowhere to go and return stuff.
Anyway, goals for the new year...
1 - No more credit card use starting in February. (It has to be February because from paycheck to paycheck is 6 weeks in January because of the length of January and because we got paid before Christmas).
2 - Take my damn pills every day so my hand stops looking like I have the pox. Since I'm not as careful as I should be with my dietary restrictions I still sometimes get some exposure to gluten and that causes me to break out periodically. I take a daily pill that takes care of that but can't remember to take it every day anymore. Suddenly I have started taking them maybe once a week and I take like 4 at a time. But usually I only remember to take them because my right hand has started to break out. Hence my hand looks like I have the pox.
3 - Finish cleaning my apartment and keep it that way. I'll give it a try. It doesn't usually work out. :)

Priorities
Michelle & I were going to discuss priorities when I came down, but clearly due to my airline that didn't happen. :(
So I've been thinking about them and here they are:
1 - Obtain a job that will both pay me enough and give me some flexibility so that I can adopt children. I work in kind of a specialized field. AND ultimately I work in a field where I have to find an employer who is large enough to need a benefits manager, but for my own sanity isn't so large I'm lost there. For example, I wouldn't want to work at the evil empire. This also requires me to live in a moderately sized community or larger.
2 - Adopt said children. I originally said I want to do this in 2 years. Honestly 2 years was an arbitrary deadline I set for myself because I know me. I can procrastinate until hell freezes over. I don't want to be 55 and look back and say whoops, I should've when I had the chance and when in the hell did I turn 55? (Because honestly, periodically, I think to myself how in the hell am I 34 already?!) And, when I said 2 years I really meant start the process in 2 years. I know it can take up to a year or more. Plus while adopting said children I have to do the other stuff to get there - bigger place to live, larger support network, etc.
Everything else isn't really a priority just something I want to do. I want to take a real vacation sometime before I adopt children. Once I adopt, if I remain a single parent the money won't be there for me to do it again for a long long time - if ever.
So I've been thinking about them and here they are:

Everything else isn't really a priority just something I want to do. I want to take a real vacation sometime before I adopt children. Once I adopt, if I remain a single parent the money won't be there for me to do it again for a long long time - if ever.

Prettyfied
So over on Michelle's new blog, I asked how a spinster like me can improve her odds at finding Mr. Right (NOT by asking out every guy who may catch my eye, Stephen). To that end, I've got a new goal. I'm going to try to make an effort by wearing a bit of makeup every day and doing something with my hair. Today I'm wearing it down with a headband. I'm also wearing a bit of eye shadow, mascara and lip gloss. I think I might take a bit of my tax refund and buy some matching under garments. I remember back in college my mom went on a weird buying spree and bought me quite a few matchy matchy things and although nobody else saw them, I still felt kind of sexy wearing them.
So today's outfit: Off white sweater that I always have liked, blue jeans, white socks with cute flowers on them and brown mary janes that show the cute socks. :)

3 year plan
I have a 3 year plan. I am hopeful it will work out.
My boss has just decided to retire from her job and yours truly is getting promoted. (Go me go me go go go me)
So here's my current plan (which works out with my plan/hope of starting to adopt kids in 2 to 3 years.)
For the first year and a half I'm going to pay off debt. Thanks to the length of time I was unemployed or underemployed Citibank and AMEX own my ass. With the extra money from my new fancy pants promotion (did I mention there was the word "Manager" in the title? :) ) I can send all of it to one of the two and start paying down my credit cards. I'm already used to living on what I currently earn so that extra money, while nice, can be useful.
For the second year and a half I'll put all the money I was sending to Citibank and AMEX into a savings account so that I can build myself up a nice little down payment for hopefully a 2 - 3 bedroom condo. It won't be the whole thing, but still better than zero. :)
So then by year 3 I'll be poised and ready for project adoption to begin. Maybe my weird friend who believes in fate and things happening for a reason and there are no coincidences is actually sort of right. (Of course if I believed that I'd also have to believe that the 3 light bulbs that burnt out in my apartment in the past 4 days are also a sign. :) )

Summer Goals
Y'all know how I periodically do goals. I don't think I'm currently rocking any so here are the ones for summer.
1 - Drink at least 1 of my large (32 oz) Baja Fresh cups of water a day. I have been getting headaches and the last time dehydration was the culprit. We shall test this theory. I think it may also be related to my nose thing. I am not stuffy like allergies but my nose is very very dry.
2 - I have to clean the apartment from top to bottom. My sister is visiting in July with her kid.
3 - Yet another CEBS test and then sign up for a new one. (OK that's not really so much a goal as something that will happen.)
4 - I want to go to the following places:
The Zoo
EMP (but only because the Disney exhibit is there. Otherwise I wouldn't bother with it)
I would also LOVE to go to the Point Defiance Zoo but this one I'd need to coax someone into taking me down to because it is in Tacoma and the length of the bus trip is prohibitive (2 hrs one way)
The Center for Wooden Boats (I think that one is on my list every year)
5 - I have to start going to the gym and doing stair climbing. I want to do the stair climb in March and I want to be able to do it without needing EMT assistance. I may start a whole other blog on this. I may not.
I think that's enough for now. :)
