Introducing Red

Now that I have a house. (Have I mentioned I have a house?) Now that I have a house I did the next thing I wanted to do. I acquired a dog.

Meet Red. I adopted him from a City animal shelter. Red is a senior - maybe 7 - 10. I actually called the shelter to be sure he was still available because he had been on the Petfinder website for several months. The various City animal shelters are all kill shelters. Luckily he was and he came home with me. Red may or may not be a Chow cross. One thing I read implied not because his tongue is totally pink. The black tongue is a dominant gene.

One thing I'm having to work on with Red is his behavior. He is really a good dog. I wouldn't just say that. He really is a good dog. However, as he settles down here, he's trying to develop Alpha behavior. That's what we're working on. I'm also working on basic commands with him. He knows "Sit," and now he knows "sit" when I use just an arm motion. This weekend we worked on "Come." So far that one is a little bit hard - mostly because Red rarely lets me away from him. How can I teach him to "Come" when he spends every moment right next to my knee?

It isn't vicodin

I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but Sam, the cat, has a food allergy. His owner can't eat wheat, he can't eat whatever they put in normal cat food that doesn't cost me a ridiculous amount of money. I'm not sure which is the most ridiculous about Sam's special cat food:

It is prescription food. In order to get the dry, canned and the treats I had to get THREE separate prescriptions. For hypoallergenic cat food. This is still cat food, not cat food laced with percocet. I don't have to hae a prescription for my gluten-free food but the cat does for his hypoallergenic cat food. Said prescription apparently ran out because when I went to pick him up I had to ask at the clinic for a new prescription as well. Depending on which Petsmart I go to, I can't always get the different varieties. There are 3 different hypoallergenic types: rabbit, venison and duck. His prescription is for the duck. Some Petsmarts let me get any variety with the prescription I have in hand. Others have given me crap because I'm getting the rabbit flavor instead of duck. Seriously?

On Dying & Pets

My parents have 2 cats. Max and something else. Sweetums I think.  They are LONG haired cats because my mother loves Persian cats. Sweetums is old, I think. Max is not so old maybe 3.  My parents are OLD (75 & 70).  It dawned on me recently that the odds are good one or more of the cats will outlive them.  Since my nephew, who kind of liked Max I think, lives with Satan right now he wouldn't be able to take them. That leaves them to my sister or I or one each. The reason I got Sam was because he's a short haired cat. Many of my friends are cat allergic and while a cat is still a cat, short hair is easier on them than long hair. They can tolerate the short hair for a longer period of time.  It is a sort of compromise without really being one. Also I hate Persian cat coats because they require intensive maintenance. I brush Sam when his fur is shedding into my face a lot, but I never have to worry about him looking like a psychotic ball of mats.

A couple of tweeps suggested ASPCA or euthanasia.  Neither is really an option.  We have a long and somewhat weird history with pets. Growing up we always had cats and dogs. All of our pets were strays acquired either from shelters or somehow through my older sister.  Especially from my older sister who would acquire them and then be living in a place that wouldn't let her have them.  I have no idea where Charlie (cat named after Charlie Bucket from Willy Wonka) or Keffie (daschund) came from (I believe they moved from PA with us when I was 4ish).  Mouse (a dachapoo) came from my sister. We went to the animal shelter when I was age something (like 6 or 7) and I got to adopt Midnight (black cat obviously).  Boogack (another black cat I think my sister named it and it may have had another realer name before that one which if I think about it hard enough the original name may have actually been "Black cat") also came from a shelter. Nick (another daschund) came via my sister. Smokey (gray cat awesome but a hugeass bitch) sister. Sebastian I adopted from the shelter via my mother who was there for some random reason. We had to put Seb down maybe 2 years later tops for feline leukemia.  For a brief time we had TJ Waterbuffalo (a sheepdog who went to live on one of my sisters' friends' ranches he was just way too big for our little house and yard) and he came from my sister natch. There was Groucho who had been a neighbor's cat but decided she liked us better. (And the neighbor's grandmother with whom they were living was just fine with that solution).  For awhile when my sister lived with us again her manx cat Jamie lived with us too.  Jamie she always kept with her. I'm sure I may be forgetting a few. Oh after I left and was a grown up they acquired Ming (shih tzu) from when my grandmother died. And how could I forget the one that started her Persian obsession... I want to say his name was Buddy. He was gray. I think he came via my sister. He also, at one point in his life, got into a battle with a neighbor cat that he almost lost and got his throat ripped open. Or maybe that was Smokey. (Seriously the gray and the black cats run together after awhile).  I also think there was a second Buddy in there, Max is kind of white but she had a tan Persian for awhile too.  Champagne puddles (also Persian cat) I think also came via my sister (although I could be wrong about that one).

All in all, growing up we had a lot of pets most of whom were cast off and rejects from other places.  Smokey had been a feral cat out at a trailer park where my sister lived for a time. How my sister decided we needed him I'll never know, but I liked Smokey even though she intially pretty much hated people. I was the only one who could flip her on her back and pet her chest while cradling her like a baby. My father always thought that was brave of me.  It was drilled into me that you don't give up the pets. It isn't their fault if you are a fuck up. Now, as an adult I can definitely see the gray areas in pet ownership.  If a pet is dangerous to to the family or other people, that's a problem. Having been attacked by someone's pet dog more than once (once requiring 9 stitches and had it been a little higher my girlie bits would be a lot different), I'll never say that all pets should be kept at all times by all people.  And while I don't believe necessarily in "dangerous" breeds, I do know that some animals, due to inbreeding or just the way their mutt genes combine, don't turn out quite right.  Champagne puddles (registered name Champagne Bubbles) was an awful cat. She never came out from under the bed, unless it was to pee on the bed. She peed on it once with my father in it asleep. They had to keep a shower curtain on the bed because of her. And yet, as my father pointed out, it wasn't her fault she was batshit crazy. Since she wasn't a danger to anyone, she got to live. We never, as I recall, had any dangerous dogs. The worst was probably Smokey who we mostly let have her own way until she got used to us. She was hostile, but not aggressive.

When my sister died in 2002, she behind more than just 2 kids. She and the kids had pets.  The horses were actually already willed to people so that was taken care of. (And it was a good thing since Satan wanted to sell them out from under the rightful owners).  I believe my nephew's dog had already died by that point. I know Jamie had passed by then. So that left a ferret named Slinky, a lunatic Australian Shepherd named Robin and my niece's cat Sugar.  When I found out my sister died, one of the first things I said to my parents was make sure you take the ferret. I knew Satan wouldn't want him and wanted to make sure Slinky lived out the end of his life content.  I offered to take him but they decided to hold on to him.  So this left Robin and Sugar. As I understand it, Satan offered my 12ish year old niece a choice. She could keep Robin, her mother's dog, or Sugar, her cat. He then had Robin put down.  To be remotely fair (not really) Robin was pretty old. Sugar was very young. He then left Sugar at the empty house until one of the rightful horse owners picked her up and brought her back to live with my parents.

In any event, the only way pets left the family, with the exception of TJ, is via their own death. Either we had them put to sleep after they were too sick and it was too cruel to make them live anymore or they died on their own somewhere in the house. I remember Charlie died under their bed. Midnight had to be put down due to Feline Leukemia. It happened while I was on vacation in Japan and I was heartbroken.  The cats were all indoor/outdoor cats. They could come and go as they pleased and I feel fairly certain one of them became hawk food right out of our back yard.

I don't know what this will mean for Max and Sweetums. Sam HATES other cats and makes Max's life miserable whenever my parents drive through on their way to Florida. Of course he'd eventually get over it and/or Sweetums would knock Sam silly with her still clawed paws and that would be the end of that. But (Along with a house that would make the people on hoarders see dollar signs in terms of how much money we would have to pay them to take care of it all) they are something me (or my sister) will have to figure out when the time comes.  I suppose it would be unkind of me to say to my mother "You can't get any more cats because you are old and I don't want to end up with them."  But I kind of want to.

Screwed Up Pets

I took Sam to a new vet this morning.  The old vet has not been able to figure out what was wrong with Sam's ears and we've been treating him with diet for 3 months now with no change. So I figured I'd get a 2nd opinion.  She confirmed that Sam is sixish and not the 18 months I was quoted nor the 3 years I just noticed today that's on his vaccination certificate.  Poor boy with the mysterious life.  Anyway, I like this cat.  He's fine as a pet. (ish he is a biter).  BUT I'm not thrilled with the prospect of him being on this fancy hypoallergenic food until he dies.  That shit is $50 a bag! And it makes me wonder how it is I get the screwed up pets.  What is it about me that says "sucker!" (I don't know that I want that answered because I have that same question about me and supershitty bosses.)

In the course of my pets as an adult (4 ferrets 1 cat) ALL 4 ferrets required adrenal shots because they got adrenal disease.  This was somewhere between a $35 - $40 shot/month.  Not counting the cost to get the flexcar since I was in Seattle with no car.  Sam requires fancy cat food.  Honestly I just want one healthy not crazy pet.

Things to say

This morning while I was hanging out waiting to get dressed to go on my interview, my neighbor came by to let me know that she thought Sam had escaped.  She had seen him on her fence.  It wasn't Sam. It was Sam's twin. He is a stray that the apartment people have tried ot have animal control catch but haven't been able to. They seem fascinated with each other.  Sam, who already loves to sit on the balcony, will stare at the other cat for hours. Apparently the other cat is also interested in being Sam's friend if he was on the balcony trying to come up to visit. Weird.

I need a pair of some heeled boots/shoes that are black.  My suit pants are too long and usually I wear a pair of peep-toe pumps with them but it is 17 degrees and slushy outside and that just wasn't going to work.  So I wore my suit with my black Doc Martens which means my pants dragged on the slushy ground like I'm some sort of teenager. Time to go to the Dry Cleaners.

I went on a job interview and had a talk with a recruiter at an agency today.  The recruiter has 2 positions open.  One I'm not interested in at all since it is for another health care group and I'm not having it again.  The other, she says, is for a place that she has heard good things about from the other people who have been placed there.  The downer for that one... salary lower than what I earn now.  Now, to be fair I pay a lot for benefits so if their benefits are better/more covered that might be okay.  The problem is, I can't really find a lot of time to interview for a lot of jobs.  Don't even get me started on my boss and time issues.  The other place was a manufacturer of heating & cooling units. I interviewed with the recruiter, the person who would be my boss and I was supposed to interview with the person who has the position now and one other person, but they had left early. That reassured me since I think I don't believe in not meeting the rest of the team for a job. We'll see. I think I might like it there.  Their hand outs are certainly impressive. :)  If this one doesn't work out I may take a little break. Stock up some more time so that I have time to interview. :)

That explains a lot

I adopted a cat a couple of weeks ago.  He's short hair. I have a plan for when Michelle comes to visit (he'll go to kitty care and the housekeeper will come in the day before she arrives). His name is Samuel.  He is all black and declawed.  He doesn't like to play. I have bought multiple cat toys and he really doesn't want to play.  I thought it might be because he's in a new environment.  Not so much.  We went to the vet today due to his ears bothering him... turns out he's not 18 months old as the cat adoption place lady said, he's actually between 5 & 6.  Eh.  She can only know what the people who released him to her know.

I just decided the fish weren't cutting it.  Petting the kitty (not a euphamism) is calming and I need that.  Also Sam gives me someone to talk to on the weekends.

Doggie P0nr

I want a pet. I have missed having one basically ever since I've moved. However, in order to get a pet, I have to pay the pet deposit and the adoption fee and then all the accoutrements a pet needs and I'm just not quite there financially yet. I'll get there, maybe in July, but not yet. Until then I've been scouring petfinder.com and craigslist. It's become an addiction. I had found one I was really interested, but I had told Michelle I would not adopt a dog until after her visit and he's no longer listed so I can hope that means he was adopted. In reality I couldn't have anyway (see previous part about $$). I can't get a cat because apparently everybody I know is allergic so it has to be a dog. I'd prefer an adult dog because I honestly don't want to deal with potty training and/or crate training a puppy. Michelle has offered me their dog, Shelby. Her size made it really difficult for them to find a place to live. Weight wise I could actually take her (I thought I couldn't). She's a really good dog and she and I get along very well. But her poop would be ginormous to pick up! :) So I'll wait and maybe the perfect pet will present itself.

I find it vaguely fascinating as I scour Craigslist that people will give up cats for free. Lots and lots and lots of free cats, but rarely dogs... Dogs always have a "rehoming" fee. I've seen one free dog in over 100 listings and this one was dumped and has only 3 legs. Oh let me back up... I just saw 2 more free dog ads... for pits. Now I have nothing against Pit Bulls, however my apartment complex does. No pits or anything crossed with a pit. (Also in case you care no: malamutes, rottweilers, German Shepherds, Huskies, Doberman, Chows, St. Bernards, Great Danes, Akitas, American Staffordshire Terriers (Pit Bulls by another name) and American Bull dogs.)

Stephen had to have Rigby put down. I knew it was coming. In fact if she hadn't been so spry I would've probably done it before I left Seattle because I knew at her last appointment she was declining rapidly. (She had lost I think 70 or 80 grams between 2 vet appointments that's a lot for a pet that only weighed 780 grams to begin with). By the time Stephen took her to the vet she was down to 400. Poor girl. Poor Stephen.

One is the lonliest number blah blah blah.

In college our friend Shelley used to sing this song regularly. It was not the best singing possible.

I dropped Rigby off at the pet sitter's yesterday morning. I don't like being petless. Nothing curled up at my knees while I fell asleep last night. Nobody to talk to when I got home from the movies yesterday.

She IS mean and spiteful!

So over the weekend I bought a new mattress cover. Holy crap, it is making my bed so soft and comfy. And I put on a nice new clean set of sheets. Holy crap is my bed so soft, comfy and cozy. Prior to making my bed, I sprayed the memory foam thingie with air freshener to get rid of any pet smell (theoretically). This morning when I went to hop in the shower, Rig was out but earlier she hadn't been able to climb onto the bed. I carefully put the puppy pad down on 'her' poop spot despite the fact that she hadn't been able to climb on the bed. I wasn't taking any chances.

Bitch peed in a totally new spot. I don't know how she managed to get onto the bed. It is on.

Spiteful

I've been a bit worried about Rigby lately. She's old. If she was the same age as Tess as the shelter thought, she's now 8. Eight is old for a ferret. Very old. She's begun doing that thing Tess did just before she died... pooping on my bed. This is obviously not my favorite thing ever and this time, unlike with Tess where clearly I was an idiot, I have it figured out... I put down a puppy pad on the bed where Rigby always goes and so then I don't have to change the sheets every fucking day. This worked for a few days. Until today. The bitch pushed the pad off the bed and then went on the bed. I'm starting to think that Rig is not in a death spiral as Tess was, but is actually spiteful and mean.

I could cage her. I probably should cage her, but she's been allowed to roam free in the apartment for so long I feel badly putting her into the cage while I'm at work all day.

Sometimes I need a man

Ok so I admit that what I'm about to say is totally not feminist or independent at all but sometimes I would really like a man in my life. Today's reason... it would be nice to have a male to dispose of dead pets. I hadn't seen Tess since some time on Saturday. This has happened before, but I got a bit worried. My biggest fear with regards to Tess was to find her dead in the closet... You know where this is going right? While cleaning my room tonight I figured I had to go looking for her. Sigh. I found her. She was all folded up in an old blanket. I'm taking her to the vet's tomorrow to let them dispose of her body. I'm sad but not as sad as I was when Minka and Baxter died. I think I'd be more sad if I hadn't already been anticipating this for several months now. The biggest sign she was probably dead... there hadn't been poop in my bed since Friday night.

Also it is completely unenvironmental and uncharitable of me, but I threw the blanket she died in in the trash. The blanket was already pretty foul. It had been my sister's and I don't know the last time it had been washed. It sat in the back of my closet for the past 6 years.

All must be forgiven

Tess sleeps with me a lot lately. It helps that it is getting cold so she likes the warmth of my bed but this morning I noticed her sleeping on my feet. So cute! Obviously I'm forgiven for giving her poison (or medicine whichever).

Poor Tesster

So for the past week I've been forcing this medicine down Tess's throat twice a day. I grab her and pry open her jaws and shove the syringe part way into her mouth. It is kind of brutal. I discovered yesterday she actually likes the flavor of the medicine and if I wasn't such a freak, she'll just lick it straight out of the syringe. It has made our med giving times much easier but I do feel a teeny tiny bit badly about how I was doing it before.

Date with destiny

Isn't that dramatic?? :) It just means I'm going to the hair cutting place tomorrow after Tess's vet appointment.

I'm a tiny bit worried about Tess's visit. I have noticed when petting her that she feels much thinner than she used to. You know how when you have an OLD pet, they start getting that weird thinness happening. I think (although could be wrong) Tess is starting to get that thinness.

My sister is coming to visit during Christmas. She wants to go to Vancouver. She has to go back on like Christmas or the day after... maybe Christmas since I think she said she has to go to work on the 26th. I might actually have to wait to open my presents until Christmas Day. That's going to be hard work for me. :)

All the world's a stage

And Tess wants to perform on it. I just bought a new bookshelf at Ikea and set it up. I haven't yet put anything on the bottom shelf yet but Tess has already decided it is her home. She keeps climbing up on it and rolling around. It's pretty darn funny.

Friday Lyday and I went to see Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist. I thought the movie was funny but my big issue with the movie was that all these kids are high school kids and none of them had any difficulty getting into the various bars and clubs in NYC they were going to. I know kids have fake IDs and what not, but a - these kids look pretty young (Although thanks to IMDB I now most of them actually are over 21.) so I can't believe ALL the bouncers would buy that and b - well, I forgot my b point but there was one. So that was the downer I found for the movie. Plus it just seemed like too much. I know that high school kids are different when I was in high school, but would it have made it so difficult to make them a tiny bit older...19 and 20 maybe?

Blanket Officianado

I think I've mentioned that Tess loves the green blanket my mom got me for Christmas. She LOVES it and frequently will sleep curled up by my feet on the blanket. To try to get my blanket back from her, I bought Tess a little pink cat blanket from the pet store. I swear it feels just like the green blanket. She doesn't like it. She still goes for the green... and worse... she's taken to climbing up onto the sofa and sleeping under it so when I go to sit down I sit on her. Poor girl. She's been sat on twice in the last week.

Hee. I started this post yesterday and this morning couldn't figure out where it went. Apparently I fell asleep before posting it. So silly.

Scared myself

I just looked at the old blog post from when I took Tess & Rig home and there I quoted their ages as being 2.5 years which would make them only 5 now. So then I looked at the ferret shelter site and there they were listed as 3 or 4 (and I remember distinctly on their cage they were listed as 4). I'm not saying I want them to die because I do love having pets, but if they had 3 more years to live that would change some of my plans because I will not even attempt to adopt children while owning ferrets. (Also that would mean another 3 years of Tess's shots which mysteriously keep changing price on me.)

Because I like to whine...

My right eyelid is twitching mercilessly. And it is driving me nuts.

I did sleep like the dead last night thanks to my good friend cough medicine with codeine. That was nice. I didn't wake up until 6:15 this morning. I have the feeling Rigby tried all her usual tricks to get me out of bed because when I woke up I discovered her sleeping curled up by my knees. She only does that after she has walked around my body and stuck her nose to my nose and done all her other things to get me out of bed. She then gives up and just hangs out until I get out of bed. This was the first morning in a long long time that I slept through that entire process. I might love cough medicine with codeine.

PM's current place of employ has a cat opening for what I do. Upon emailing with her she pointed out the illogicallity of attempting to acquire that cat based on the commute with family factor and the if I lived closer to that cat the family far from PM which defeats that purpose. I'm in an interesting conundrum. I kind of have to wait for the ferrets to die (which, given their life spans, should be any time now although they certainly don't act like they are decrepit) if I want to move back to CA. They are illegal there and although I don't have an issue with breaking that stupid ass law, Tess needs a shot every month and although there are vets who treat ferrets there I would rather not have to deal with that monthly.

Rigby knows how to torment me!

I spent 40 minutes looking for Rigby this afternoon. The vet tech at my vet's office is taking care of the girls for me while I'm gone and she swung by to pick up the girls. Tess was no problem. She was awake and I managed to snag her and dump her in the carrier right away. Rigby was another story. I searched. I tore my bedroom apart. I shoved a stick under the bed trying to wake her if she was there. I threw stuff all around to look under things. I couldn't find her. I begged. I pleaded. I shook treat containers. I shook the leash which has the bell on it. I called her name in the way I always do. I shook my house keys (which now I'm wondering what I did with those). I couldn't find her. So eventually the vet tech left and I have to take the girls to the vet's office tomorrow to drop them off there. Sigh. So then I started worrying. Rigby isn't usually such a sound sleeper. She's usually rather alert and doesn't sleep so soundly. Could she bed dead? And holy fuck if she is I'll never find her in my bedroom by tomorrow before I have to leave. Four hours later she wanders out into the living room as though there was absolutely nothing wrong. I could almost kill her.

Rigby's Lucky Star

This morning Rigby was doing that ferret thing where she walks around my body until I go nuts and wake up. I opened one eye and looked at her nose, just inches from mine, and said that if it was before 6:30 I would kill her. I then looked at the clock. 6:34. She's got mad psychic skillz that one does.
