My sister works at Novartis and she has these very same thoughts.
Funny story: they had a fire drill and of course all the doors locked down except the emergency doors. The next day, she had several complaints from employees who said that if it had been a real fire they wouldn't have been able to get out except through the emergency doors b/c all the other ones were locked.
Mind you, these are not dumb people working there. Wow.
