A decision...

I think I'm going to adopt another ferret or 2. I know I always thought I'd get a cat once the Bax passed away, but the more I think about it, the more I want another little fluffy bundle of craziness that creates little furnace spots on the bed where they're sleeping. I just like them that's all. I have to clean up all of Bax's toys and bedding and stuff first and clean it as well as search around under the bed to see what, if anything, she stored there. That may be my weekend project so that I can then adopt a new ferret.

I had a ferret once... an albino named Chloe. She was a ho-leeee terror to my cat at the time, so I had to make a choice and I found Chloe a good home with a couple that had another ferret. Even though I didn't have her for long, and she was a total devil, I adored her and have always wanted another... but I've always had cats or rabbits or hamsters or mice and didn't think it would be the right fit. Maybe someday. I have friends who have had them and said they make amazing little pets. If your heart is with ferrets and you're ready for another, then I say go for it.

Great decision to adopt rather than buy from a pet store...there are 4 fuzzies currently in our house...we've had a grand total of 11, the most at once was 6... 4 were adopted from people who didn't want the when the started having kids...my son is now 5 months old and we've had no issues...I can't imagine not having a few ferets running around (ours have free run of the house) Best of luck to you :-)

Growing up all our animals were acquired either from the animal shelter or from my sister who would find them in various places where she would live so we never had pet store purchased animals. Both my original ferrets were pet store purchased, although Bax was a vicious biter and if I hadn't taken her in she would've found her way to a shelter I'm sure. I'm on the fence about shelters these days. Just because they can be so rigid in their adoption standards and can be so complicated to just adopt one from them. I get that they want to protect the animals, but for example, a well off friend of my sister's who had acreage near no roads told a cat shelter that if the cat wanted out she would let the cat out and that wasn't good enough. She was denied. That was a little excessive to us, so sometimes I think that in their interest to protect animals they can turn off people who would be good owners for some minor reason.

We didn't really have any trouble getting Shelby (dog) from the adoption place. They just want us to keep an extra tag on her that has their info on it and if we ever have to give her up for any reason, they want her back.

Jo, I am assuming the shelter that turned your sister's friend down must be a "no kill" facility because I find it hard to believe they would turn down a decent home to gassing the cat later in the week...that would just be idiotic.
